USING LOOFAHS TO EXFOLIATE

Scrubbing with a loofah sponge or pad is an excellent addition to your skin care regimen.  Loofahs can provide excellent exfoliation, particularly when skin is especially dry and flaky in the winter months. They can also help enhance circulation and encourage pores to expel oil and other impurities.  Gentle, regular use of a loofah can lead to soft glowing skin!

WHAT IS A LOOFAH EXACTLY?

Loofah is a fibrous vegetable that swells like a sponge and softens when it is wet. It is environmentally friendly and safe to use on almost all skin types. The natural loofah you use in your bathroom comes from the luffa plant.  The luffa plant is from the same group of plants as gourds, pumpkins, and cucumbers. The Luffa plant grows as a flowering annual vine. The pollinated flowers grow cylindrical green fruits that eventually develop into a seed pod filled with many intertwined cellulose fibers. The outer skin of these fruits is removed to reveal the "loofah" inside.

So if you thought that your loofah came from the sea, banish that thought.  These natural sponges grow on land and come from plants, not some mysterious creature from the sea.

BENEFITS TO YOUR SKIN WHEN USING LOOFAHS

  • Exfoliation. The outermost layer of your skin, the epidermis, naturally sheds dead skin cells. Normal friction removes some of these shedding cells, but others remain in place, dulling your complexion making it look dull or ashy. Exfoliation helps this natural process along, using gentle friction to brush excess skin cells from the surface of your skin. Removing dead skin cells not only improves the look of your skin, it also sweeps away places where bacteria and grime could collect. Another benefit of exfoliation is no more ingrown hairs.  Before shaving, women can use a loofah to exfoliate their legs to relieve and prevent ingrown hairs/folliculitis. Your legs will feel super soft and smooth!
  • Improving Circulation. Any friction on your skin increases localized blood flow. Capillaries, the tiny blood vessels closest to your skin, naturally expand when stimulated. You've made use of this response if you've tried to warm your hands by rubbing them together to create friction and stimulate blood flow. A loofah has a similar effect, stimulating increased circulation to areas that you scrub with it. Unlike harshly abrasive scrubbers and sponges, a loofah's firm but elastic fibers are round in cross section and are less likely to scratch skin.

HOW TO USE THE pureSCRUBS LOOFAH

Proper use of our loofah can help you obtain youthful, healthy and radiant skin and using our loofah is so very easy!

Step 1 - Prepare your skin  While in the shower or bath, wet your body with warm water.  The skin always responds better when it is primed with warm water.
Step 2 - Prepare the loofah Then, wet the loofah with warm water. The more water you add, the softer the loofah will get. If you let it dry, the material gets harder again. This allows you to choose the scrubbing texture you prefer. You can use the loofah by itself with just water, with soap or even our body scrubs.    Most customers use it with their favorite soap and the combination of the lather and the loofah does an excellent job of cleaning and exfoliating your skin.
Step 3 - Start scrubbing gently  Take your time and carefully scrub your body with the loofah.  Use small, circular motions and be gentle. This will help remove dead skin cells and is kinder to your skin than scrubbing up and down, especially on your arms, back, legs and torso. It doesn't take a lot of pressure to loosen and remove the top layer of dead skin cells. There is no benefit to scrubbing harshly or vigorously – so don’t do it.  You will only cause tiny abrasions to your skin and this can lead to skin irritations.
Step 4 - Rinse Well  Rinse your skin with warm water from top to bottom.  Take your time and just make sure all the dead skin cells are washed down the drain. Feel free to apply moisturizing cream after your shower and enjoy your smooth and glowing skin!

If your skin is very sensitive or if you applied too much pressure, you may see some redness but that should go away quickly.   If this happens, just remember next time to apply less pressure when scrubbing.

VERY IMPORTANT:  KEEPING YOUR LOOFAH CLEAN

While loofahs are great, they can also get dirty very fast.   Dead skin cells, soapy material, water can and will get trapped in the little fibrous holes and over time this can cause bacteria build up.  This is why it is important to clean it well after each use.   This is also why we recommend disposing or replacing the loofah after 3 to 4 weeks of use.

With any natural, plant fiber-based product it is vital that you keep your loofah clean and dry. If you follow these simple steps you can help keep your loofah clean and ready for use.   Loofahs start out hygienic, but the accumulation of dead skin cells and storage in humid environments could turn it into bacteria paradise.

      • Rinse it well. Rinse your loofah well after each use and squeeze and shake out excess water. Make sure that you have rinsed all product out of your loofah.
      • Keep it dry. Bacteria loves growing in wet places, so keep your loofah dry to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for nasty germs infections. Once you've rinsed your loofah, store it in a cool, dry place. Ideally your loofah should be stored in a non-humid place with good air circulation.
      • Launder it. Wash your loofah in your washing machine. You should wash it every week in cold water using a mild or gentle cycle. BUT do not put the sponge in the dryer as the natural fibers will melt
      • Disinfect it. Soak your loofah in diluted bleach for five minutes each week to kill bacteria and germs. After soaking in bleach, just rinse with warm water and then hang dry.
      • Boil it? Yes, some customers even dip the loofah in boiling water for a few minutes which definitely kills germs and bacteria.   If you do this, just be extra careful with the boiling water.
      • Replace it. We recommend replacing your natural loofah every 3-4 weeks

With proper use, a loofah can help you obtain the soft glowing skin you desire.  When paired with your favorite body scrub, the effect is truly powerful and noticeable.  So don’t skip on using a loofah as you pamper the skin you are in.
